Kunst kann fast alles, muss es aber nicht. Heute arbeiten wir in einem neoliberalen Turbokapitalismus, der an seine absoluten globalen Grenzen gekommen ist. Ohne künstlerische Arbeit wird es keine nachvollziehbare Übersetzung der jetzt NOTwendigen sozial-ökologischen Transformationsprozesse der westeuropäisch geprägten Industriegesellschaften geben.For many decades Berlin has developed a lively, diverse, and independent way of producing culture and counteracting government decisions, based on, local, generous, and enthusiastic, but also worried, social communities that exchanged resources and ideas within a larger political debate. The city became a “natural” shelter and fertile environment for dissidents, artists, political refugees, and immigrants with any background also due to the need to overcome a traumatic past full of human generated atrocities that are still present in people memories and behaviour.Funding and access to funding is a key element in sustaining project spaces. There are many funding tools that project spaces can use to cover the costs of labor, materials, and rent. But the options are competitive and usually involve a lot of effort and paperwork. In our opinion, there needs to be a change in the funding system that includes simplifying the application process and shortening the waiting time between submission and announcement of the result. Only like this can the project space keep the momentum and focus on artistic and curatorial projects.
