… But definitely key words such as “project space”, “artist-run”, “grassroots”, “laboratory”, etc. are still good key words (to be constantly re-discussed) that underline the spirit and intention of such open experiments that somehow can only function as open experiments!
A free interactive and inclusive format to create, express, and exchange interdisciplinary ideas with spontaneous, playful, DIY approaches; having access to and exchanging various physical spaces to manifest all facets of what independent cultural production can unfold – also in the sense of creating social awareness and responsibility due to the fact that every single participant, no matter the “role” or “title” is deeply aware & involved in the process of making things happen, sharing responsibilities and profits (if there are any 🙂
… Investors and businesses assumed the form of faceless international partnerships with enormous capital and devouring public resources deciding on the future of all citizens, delivering less and less social protection and consideration for cultural and social diversity.Die Umstände für unabhängige Projekträume haben sich bei gleichbleibender Dringlichkeit für deren Existenz geändert: Wir brauchen weiterhin Freiräume, in denen die Frage „Wie wollen wir zusammenleben in dieser vernetzten und verletzten Welt?“ auf viele verschiedene Arten gestellt und Annäherungen an eine mögliche Beantwortung ausprobiert werden können. Die massiv gesteigerten Raummieten in Berlin und die fast ausnahmslose Finanzierung nur über Projektförderung und die Nichtunterstützung von Infrastruktur erschweren und verunmöglichen größtenteils Experimentation, Ausprobieren, einen Raum zum Scheitern und damit Lernen. Projektanträge müssen vorab bis zum letzten Ergebnis ausbuchstabiert werden inklusive der erwarteten Zuschauer*innenzahl. Das fesselt viel Ideenreichtum und Mut zu Neuem, es verhindert gleichzeitig ein kontinuierliches Arbeiten und hält Projekträume dauerhaft in einem Zustand ungesunder, prekärer Arbeitsbedingungen. Was wir uns für die Berliner Projekträume wünschen? Planbare, langfristige und nachhaltige Förderung mit Respekt und Vertrauen in Räume, die seit Jahren wesentlich zur Kulturlandschaft beitragen.The commercialization of the contemporary art scene in the last decade has created alienation and dissociation from the audience. The social filters at the established exhibition spaces, the sterilization of methods of presentation, and over-professionalism have created an image and perception of inaccessibility. In that respect, project spaces and art initiatives that resist these dynamics and strive for keeping direct social contact maintain the political potential of artistic practice. We don’t promote the conventional star system in selecting the artists we are collaborating with; we don’t pursue a hierarchical method by employing an omnipotent curator; we value the critical content and formal experimentalism of the artworks rather than the conditions of their presentation, and we don’t sell any artworks in our space; we don’t invest our energy in commercial speculation. We put an emphasis on the collective and on the social. We keep contact with our immediate neighborhood (in Neukölln), and we prioritize the knowledge about and the cultural accumulation of a particular geography. Hence, we engage in a counter-position against the dominant dynamics that have shaped the field of the contemporary art scene in the last decade.
The pandemic condition has also been a drastic element that forced actors in the field to reconsider methods of presentation and social contact.
